WhatsApp says in its release that support for Windows Phone operating systems will end on December 31, 2019.  So, yes as of two days ago Windows Phones are no longer supported by WhatsApp.  The release states that as of that date you will no longer be able to USE WhatsApp on Windows Phone.

As of February 1, 2020, support will end for the following operating systems as well:

  • Android version 2.3.7 or older
  • IOS 8 and older

WhatsApp will continue to work on these IOS and Android devices, but will not receive updates, and you will no longer be able to create new accounts or reverify existing accounts on these older operating systems.

To check which version your phone is running, do the following:

For Android select:

  • Settings > About Phone > Android Version
  • Below “Android Version” you will see the version number

For IOS select:

  • Settings > General > About
  • To the right of “Version” you will see the version number

I no longer have anyone I know using Windows Phone, so I am unable to verify that WhatsApp functionality has ended.  If you have any first-hand experience, please let us know in the comments.

Check out the WhatsApp support page, outlining these changes here.
