Hi everyone, sorry for the bit of hiatus, but I realized I needed to rethink how I was doing these episode write-ups.

When I originally decided to write about the Mandalorian, it was because I enjoy Star Wars, thought it would be fun to share thoughts and discussions with fellow fans, and of course I love to geek out (definition).

However, when I started writing, what was supposed to be thought provoking discussion, turned into beat for beat recaps of the show, without spoilers, and that is not what I intended.

Going forward I’m going to do a couple new things. One, it will be assumed those reading these posts have already watched the show (or don’t mind spoilers) and want to discuss it, or learn from it, like myself.  Two, each of these posts will be split up into three sections; the first being a recap, the second being thoughts or discussion section, and the third being a did you know section to give little pieces of knowledge.

So without further ado.

WARNING: Spoilers for The Mandalorian Episode 4 below

RECAP

This episode starts out in a peaceful fishing village, that is then attacked by something large, and raided by a group of unknown people.

Of course, this is where the Mandalorian ends up with the intention of not being found for a couple of months. “Ready to lay low and stretch your legs for a couple months, you little Womp rat?” he asks the child.

After a rough start he then makes nice with another who sought to hide away on this back planet, Cara Dune.  They decide they both can’t stay here, and she was here first.

While the Mandalorian and the child are boarding the Razorcrest to leave, two farmers show up and ask for help with the raiders, which Mando agrees to in exchange for lodging in their “middle-of-nowhere” town.

Mando recruits his new-found friend, and they discover an AT-ST is what has been causing the trouble and tell the villagers they can’t live here.  Queue upset villagers and a combat training montage with the fishing village.

Cara and Mando lure the raiders and AT-ST out, and with the help of the villagers, fight off the raiders and catch in their trap.  They day is won and Mando intends to let the child stay in the village, until another bounty hunter with a tracker appears. Mando and the child are off again.

THOUGHTS

This episode had a really cool feel to it.  They took the western feel of the show and placed it in an Eastern-like fishing village.  I like those Last-Samurai type settings of Eastern philosophy, tranquility, and teachings.

It was nice to see some time in the middle showing Mando, and especially the child, getting to know the villagers, making friends, and understanding their way of life.  There was even a bit of a love interest for Mando, and it was clear he did not want to split up the child from the other kids.

The opening with Mando and the child flipping switches back and forth on the spaceship’s dashboard was also hilarious. I like seeing the bond they have been making over several episodes now.

How about that AT-ST with red eyes?  I don’t think I have ever seen that before.  I’m not exactly sure what would cause its eyes to glow red, but it looked cool coming out of a dark forest none the less!

What did you think of Cara Dune?  I thought she was a cool character with a neat backstory, even if there wasn’t a lot of it.  But I can’t help but wonder, are we just going to continue getting these cool new characters for an episode or 2, and then the Mando moves on again?  I like some of these characters and would definitely like to learn more about them.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • AT-ST stands for All Terrain Scout Transport.  It is a two-legged, armored walker equipped with cannons and grenade launchers.  You can read more at Wookieepedia.
  • We still don’t know the name of Yoda’s species. That is why the internet calls the child “baby yoda,” even though Yoda has already passed by this time. Wookieepedia.
  • Cara Dune was previously a shock trooper fighting against the Galactic Empire, before putting her military discipline behind her, and settling down to an early retirement.  Wookieepedia.

What did everyone think of episode 4?  What do you think of the new format?  Hopefully the format is better at invoking discussions and providing readers with some knowledge they didn’t have before, via the did you know section. Speaking of, anything missing from the did you know, that you would have liked explained, either from this article or the show itself?
